Views alone do not unlock payment
There is no view threshold for monetisation. YouTube's requirement is subscribers plus watch time, and then a payout threshold on top of that.
The three gates
- Join the Partner Programme: 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months — or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid Shorts views in 90 days.
- Have an approved AdSense account linked and pass the channel review, which checks for reused content and policy compliance.
- Cross the payout threshold: your balance must reach $100 before YouTube pays out, around the 21st of the following month.
There is also a lower "fan funding" tier at 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views, which unlocks memberships, Super Thanks and shopping — but not ad revenue.
How many views is that in practice?
Watch hours, not views, are the real gate. Some worked examples:
- 10-minute videos with 50% retention: 4,000 hours needs roughly 48,000 views.
- 20-minute videos with 50% retention: roughly 24,000 views.
- 60-second Shorts: essentially irrelevant to the watch-hour route; you would need the 10-million-view path instead.
Longer, genuinely useful videos reach the threshold with a fraction of the views that short content needs.
Fastest legitimate route
Pick five questions your audience actually searches, answer each properly in 12–20 minutes, and publish weekly. Search-driven videos keep accumulating watch hours for years, which is exactly what the rolling 12-month window rewards. Trend-chasing videos spike and die before they help.
What disqualifies you
Reused content without commentary, watch time from ads or embeds that do not count as valid public views, and artificially generated views. Purchased views are removed and can block the review outright.
FAQ
### Do watch hours from Shorts count?
No. Only long-form public watch time counts toward the 4,000-hour requirement.
### Does the 12-month window reset?
It rolls continuously — old watch hours drop off as they age past 12 months.
